Press...Nature's Pace - Bob Hillary & The Massive Mellow; We,ve played this CD constantly since it arrived in the office for review. The 11 tracks are a chilled out blend of acoustic songs and mellow melodies. The band is based around Bob Hillary who is the former frontman of The Ruffness. The CD is a trancey, chilled out and hypnotic auditory experience that sounds fresh and real with elements of MASSIVE ATTACK and BOB MARLEY in its reggae rootsy combination... We suggest you give it a whirl. 5 STARS (The Witch Hikers Guide - July 09) The Skinny, July 2009 In a world of crazy music that assaults our ears with bleeps, glitches, and roaring, there is a need for something that grounds all that electricity. This album does that, as it is rooted in and coloured by the natural environment. The sounds of evening crickets and lapping water recorded just outside Edinburgh weave between songs layered with uplifting trumpets, mellow organs, rounded synthesisers and intricate guitar picking. At times there are elements of Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, and The Cat Empire, and, David Gray. Bob’s distinctive voice clearly carries lyrics worthy of reflection on warming melodies and the songwriting throughout is excellent: There’s the punchy and catchy 'You Keep Me Warm’; The wholesome ‘Its All Good; And the drifting blue jazz of ‘Take it Slow’. Organic music is good for you, and this one’s a grower. Bob Hillary and the Massive Mellow 'Nature’s Pace' |
This isn’t a record that needs to grow on you; you can hear the quality in each and every track from the get-go. From the ‘mellow’ tracks like It’s all good to the more energetic reggae-meets-big-brass of You keep me warm, this is a beautifully executed album with sweet lyrics and original melodies. There is something a touch reminiscent of Paul Simon in Bob Hillary’s voice but his folksy roots are funkier with some dub influences and a world music sensibility. If you caught him at any of the music festivals this summer, this album is the perfect way to transport yourself back to a green field in the Summer sun enjoying a mellow mood. Highly recommended.
